BEHIND THE SOFA continues PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 January 2012 00:00

Are you ready to join us BEHIND THE SOFA? Exclusive to Edge Media Television, on Sky channel 200, this is a new review comedy panel show broadcasting on a TV screen or monitor near you every Sunday since 15 January 2012. Pitching celebrity reviewers against each other, the latest DVD and Blu-ray blockbusters do battle with classic archive titles for the right to be hailed as the ‘Release of the Week’.

In line with the episodes so far, the diversity in DVDs under review is obvious from this week’s edition, making its debut on 5 February 2012 – “The Inbetweeners Movie”, the big screen outing from Channel 4’s TV comedy; “Beyond” – which sees Jon Voight as a detective who teams up with a tabloid psychic to track down a missing child; “Go To Blazes” – a 1962 comedy heist movie where a fire engine is the star; and “Michael Bentine’s Potty Time” – a fondly remembered children’s TV series of the 1970s.

“In this digital age, all we hear about is ‘downloading content’ and ‘Pay-Per-View’ services” said alex:g, host and producer of the series. “The idea of still buying a product to put on your shelves, containing TV and movie material, seems almost to be frowned upon. As a medium for not only the casual viewer but also avid memorabilia collectors, DVD and the ‘new kid on the block’, Blu-ray, continue to be formats that are very popular. Now we present a new way to find out what’s out there, including those releases that might not be immediately apparent, having fallen ‘Behind the Sofa’, if you like.”

WIN: Holy Flying Circus DVDs PDF Print E-mail

In 1979, Monty Python’s “Life of Brian” became one of the most controversial films ever to be released in British cinemas, causing outrage amongst religious groups, members of the public and politicians, most of whom hadn’t even seen the film. Accusing it of being blasphemous, many called for the film to be banned.

On the back of this is a brand-new, critically acclaimed comedy-drama “Holy Flying Circus” revisits that period and delivers a witty, entertaining and affectionate homage to the Pythons and the film that, today, has become accepted as one of the greatest comedy movies of all time. As the controversy surrounding the cinema release of “Life Of Brian” raged around them, the Pythons found themselves not only fighting a war against censorship but also at the centre of a debate about what is an acceptable subject matter for comedy. And now we have two copies to give away in a prize competition. It's worth noting that when this release featured on the new DVD and Blu-ray review show Behind The Sofa, 8.00pm Sundays on Sky channel 200, it walked off with the "Release of the Week" acolade.

“Yamada” (aka “The Samurai of Ayothaya”) is a period martial arts movie set in the late 16th Century Kingdom of Ayothaya (now Thailand). The titular character is a Japanese samurai who is betrayed and left for dead by his own people. A band of passing Thai warriors save him and take him back to their village to recuperate. With the blessing of the elder priest he decides to stay and learn their deadly Muay Boran fighting style before enrolling in a tournament to become a royal bodyguard.

Having lived in the region some time, Yamada (ex-model Seigi Ozeki) can already speak the local language; this ability in combination with his charm and unwavering code of honour helps him to befriend Jumpaa, a local beauty with an inquisitive daughter, and her brother Khaam (Thanawut Ketsaro) who is impressed with Yamada’s willingness to go native. As a neighbouring enemy force threatens to invade, our hero knows that one day he must return home and seek vengeance.

“Rolling Thunder” follows the story of Major Charles Rane (William Devane). On his return to his home town of San Antonio, Texas, he is given a true hero’s welcome. He and his friend, John Vohden (Tommy Lee Jones) have endured eight years of physical and mental torture in a Vietnamese Prisoner Of War camp, and the mental scars run deep. The world around him is just a blur, and he has had all his social skills tortured out of him.

The adjustment to life in ‘Civvy Street’ is not going to be easy. Rane’s wife has been unfaithful with one of his friends. His son, just a year and a half old when Rane was shipped off, doesn’t recall him at all. Rane sees his son as his only bridge back to normality. The world has moved on, but Rane’s imprisonment stopped the clock on his own existence. The gift of a box of silver dollars from an appreciative local community is the spark that leads to tragedy.

What would you do if you gradually started losing your senses, one by one? Would you despair and give up on life or embrace it, cherishing others and those things you can still enjoy? That is the premise of this fantastic new movie starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green. Susan (Green) is Glasgow-based epidemiologist, one of the first people to discover the outbreak of a global phenomenon that is causing people to lose their sense of smell. Michael (McGregor) is a chef at a restaurant across the road from Susan’s flat.

The affliction, cleverly nicknamed Severe Olfactory Syndrome or ‘SOS’ starts slowly at first, and the warning sign that a victim is about to lose their sense of smell is that they suffer a moment of overwhelming grief for all that they have lost and regret in life. Scientists are bewildered and whilst people panic a little as the condition spreads, they quickly learn to redress the balance by focusing on the senses that remain. Then the second wave strikes everyone at once, causing momentary ravenous hunger followed by the loss of taste.
